If you aren’t confident with your public speaking skills, and you want to improve them, you should consider taking a course to learn how to be a great speaker. Whether you purchase a book, take a course online, or go to a local community college, you have to find a course that works for you.

The problem with taking a course is that there are SO many available. You want to make sure you find a good course by a reputable person who can help you learn how to speak, but how do you know for sure? No one wants to waste their hard-earned money expecting something they don’t receive. There are three things you should consider when trying to find a course:

  • Make sure that the course you take is one led by a real professional speaker, and not just someone with a theory who has never given a speech themselves. If it is an on-line course, make sure that it is a reputable person with experience speaking.
  • You should try to find one that will teach you the step-by-step basics of writing a speech and creating and structuring your own message. Many instructors give you a template, but fail to teach you how to come up with your own message.
  • Find an instructor that explains why certain techniques work, and why others don’t, so you can develop a better understanding of the technique and be better able to use it yourself.

Public speaking courses can help you become a better speaker, but each course is designed for different types of people. You know what to look for, but where do you look? There are a large number of courses available, and you need to find one right for you.

  • Public Speaking Organizations can be a valuable asset to learning effectively. One such organization is Toastmasters. They can direct you to either a public speaking training program, or to resources to get more information on the topic.
  • Local colleges are excellent resources for a special public speaking training course. You don’t have to want a degree to just take one a course, and you can be assured the person teaching you is reputable.
  • If you are a somewhat advanced speaker you might not want to take a full-fledged public speaking training class. You can, however, consult with a professor on a part-time or even a one-time basis.

If you want to present yourself well, and especially if you make presentations for a living, it’s in your best interest to go to a public speaking course. Such courses will:

  • You will teach you what you should say, and how to say it.
  • They can teach you methods that will help you overcome fear, build confidence in yourself, better present yourself verbally.
  • These training programs help you develop your own creative speech topics, and then present them so they are easy to follow and convincing.

Most people attending your speech will come to learn from you, debate or to be entertained by you. As the presenter, you owe it to them to be able to verbally disseminate information that can be drawn upon, and to inspire them to do want to do so. If you feel you can’t do that on your own, find someone who can teach you. Both you, and your attendees will be glad you did!
